Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to completely disrobe?

During a traditional Swedish massage, it is customary to disrobe completely.  However, you may remain clothed, or partially clothed, if you wish.  Although I can provide a more effective massage for certain areas while you are unclothed, I can adjust my technique.  Please be assured that your privacy is important, and only the part that is being massaged will be undraped.

How long does a session last?

Most of my custom massages last from one hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.  Because it is difficult to give a full body massage in 30 minutes, I do offer a neck, shoulder, and back massage or a reflexology treatment for that amount of time.  I also offer hour-and-a-half sessions, where I can concentrate more fully on trouble spots or can incorporate reflexology or energy work into the session.

What do I need to do before the massage?

Try not to eat a heavy meal before your massage.  If you do, your body will direct its attention to digestion, and you will find it more difficult to relax.  Also, please refrain from drinking any alcoholic beverages or using recreational drugs before your massage.  Alcohol and drugs alter your sensations, so you won’t be able to tell if the techniques I’m using are too deep or if you experience pain.  If it’s possible, take a warm shower or bath, so that your muscles are warm and relaxed.  Turn off your cell phone ahead of time.  This is YOUR time.

What happens during a session?

Plan on arriving about 10 minutes prior to your appointment time on the initial visit.  You will fill out a form, which will be used to determine why you are seeking massage, your massage preferences, and any medical conditions you may have.  It will also be used to track your progress.  All information is confidential.

In the treatment room, a soft, clean, padded, warm table will be waiting for you.  The lights will be low, soft music will be playing, and wonderful scents will be diffused into the air, all to ease your transition from workday stress to blissful relaxation.  Between the two of us, we will determine the best massage for you.  I will then leave the room while you disrobe (completely, partially, or not at all) and get under the top sheet on the table.  I will knock before re-entering the room.  I will re-adjust anything that’s not to your liking – remember, this is YOUR massage – you make the decisions.  I have pillows and blankets to make you comfortable.  If you prefer different music, you may choose something else.  If the temperature is not to your liking, it can be adjusted.  Be sure to tell me about any allergies you have.  Don’t be afraid to give me feedback during the massage.

About half way through the massage, I will remove any pillows or bolsters which are supporting you and will help you turn over.  Don’t worry – it is important to me that this transition is comfortable for you and that your sense of privacy is maintained.  The drape will stay around you while you turn over.  I’ll then reposition the pillows and resume the session.

What happens at the end of the massage?

At the end of your session, just lie still awhile to feel the difference in your body and mind.  You may feel a bit disoriented.  Not to worry – this can happen and is completely normal.  Just take your time sitting up and getting off the table.  This is the time for you to ask any questions about the massage.  Drink at least two 8 ounce glasses of water afterwards.  This will help rehydrate your tissues and help flush out the toxins that were released.  You may feel sore or stiff the next day, especially if we worked on areas that were particularly tense.  This should go away within a day.

What if I feel pain?

A massage should never hurt.  If you experience anything other the mild discomfort due to tense muscles or the “hurts so good” of a deep massage, tell me immediately.  I can adjust the pressure or change techniques.

When do I pay?

Most people pay at the end of the session.  However, if you tend to become disoriented or very relaxed, you may prefer to pay beforehand.

Do I need to tip?

As a professional massage therapist, I consider your referrals to other people the best tip.  However, you may tip for a great massage experience if you wish.

How often do I need to receive bodywork?

If you are receiving bodywork for a specific condition, you may need to receive massage once or twice a week for several weeks and then taper off as you get better.  If you want to reduce stress, a once a month session is fine.  We can discuss the frequency of our massage at the time of booking an appointment, at the end of a session, or at the midway point of your treatment plan.
